Mixed Chorus Constitution |
Preamble |
| The purpose of this organization will be to promote among its members and audiences a love of and appreciation for music through the media of choral singing. |
Article 1 |
| Section 1: The name of this organization will be the St. John's University Mixed Chorus. |
Article 2 |
Section 1: Any student attending classes at the Jamaica campus of St. John's University who wishes to apply for membership must meet the following qualifications:
- The person must show an interest in furthering the above stated purposes of this organization.
- The person must meet the musical qualifications set by the director

Section 2: A member shall be considered an active member if one fulfills the attendance obligations set forth by this organization |
Article 3 |
Section 1: Dismissal results from:
- More than three unexcused absences during one semester.
- Misconduct with regard to choral etiquette.
- Unsatisfactory vocal work. The director will determine this.
Etiquette shall be defined as full cooperation with the director (or substitute) and support of the Chorus' Executive Board in all their endeavors to ensure the proper functioning of the Chorus. |
Section 2: The executive board in conjunction with the director and the Campus Activities Liaison shall consider reasons for a member's dismissal. |
Article 4 |
| Section 1: A member must be able to attend all rehearsals and performances. If a person is unable to attend these rehearsals, then said person will be unable to become a member. The director will decide upon the attendance policy after consulting with the Chorus Executive Board and the Campus Activities Liaison. The director and president will keep an account of all attendance. |
Section 2: A member is allowed no more than three excused absences a semester. An unexcused absence is not acceptable. An absence shall be excused if a legitimate excuse is submitted by contacting the director or leaving word for him or her with Pat Cossaro, Office of Campus Activities (extension 6258), prior to the practice or scheduled event. |
Article 5 |
| Section 1: Weekly rehearsals will be held every Tuesday, fixed by the director. |
Section 2: The president or the director can call general meetings and extra rehearsals. |
Article 6 |
Section 1: The officers of this organization shall be:
- President
- Vice President
- Public Relations
- Secretary
- Librarians
- Historians
The President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Public Relations (the officers) are to be elected by members. |
Section 2: A majority of the active members must be present for the election of each officer. Elections shall take place on a date scheduled by the Executive Board in conjunction with the Campus Activities Liaison. |
Section 3: Each candidate for office must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 in the SJU Chorus. Each candidate shall deliver a self-nominating speech of no more than three minutes stating his or her qualifications and goals for that given office. Voting will be by secret ballot. |
Section 4: The elections of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Public Relations (the officers) require a majority vote of the total membership. |
Section 5: A person can hold only one office in the Chorus, unless a member is a librarian and historian at the same time. If unable to attend elections, one may submit a secret ballot to the Campus Activities liaison before the day of elections. |
Section 6: No officer can take a leave of absence without resigning from his or her office. The president or director has the authority to ask for an officer's resignation. |
Article 7 |
| Section 1: The President presides at all meetings. He/she must be an active member of the Chorus for two years prior to his/her candidacy and must have a minimum of one-year Executive Board experience. The rest of the Executive Board will fill vacant positions by working as a team to take care of extra responsibilities. The President will set up all performances (in conjunction with the director), secure all space for the yearly functions held, and publicize all Chorus events after discussing it with the Campus Activities Liaison. The President will take attendance at all performances. The President will also act as a liaison between the Chorus and the Office of Campus Activities. |
| Section 2: The Vice-President will fulfill the obligations of the president in his or her absence. He/she must be an active member of the Chorus for at least two years priorto his/her candidacy and must have a minimum of one-year Executive Board experience. The Vice-Prez will be responsible for distributing robes and formal wear. He/she is also responsible for organizing a party at the last chorus rehearsal of the spring semester. |
| Section 3: The Public Relations Officer must be an active member of the Chorus for one year prior to candidacy and must have previously been a librarian or historian for one semester. The Public Relations Officer will work with the Office of Student Life regarding keeping a accurate archive of past Mixed Chorus Alumni. He/she is responsible in creating monthly or bi-yearly news update mailings to Alumni, the community. He/she is also responsible for informing the other performing arts organizations regarding events of the Chorus as well as updating the Chorus about events being held by the other organizations. The Public Relations Officer will also make necessary purchases to prepare for the Chorus' performance at St. Mary's Children Hospital along with the assistance of the Student Life Performing Arts Liaison. The Public Relations Officer will also assist the Vice-Prez in distributing robes and formal wear to the members. The Public Relations Officer will also purchase(with hel
ful suggestions from the rest of the E-Board) presents for the director and other administrators at the end of each semester. |
| Section 4: The Secretary's job is to keep minutes and attendance at all Executive Board meetings. He/she will be responsible for the chorus newsletter that will come out at least once a semester. The Secretary is also responsible for taking attendance at performances if the President and Vice-President are absent. The Secretary will keep track of members' birthdays so the E-Board can acknowledge the people. The Secretary is also responsible for making copies of the required music in the Co-Op. The Secretary is also responsible of working with the Student Life Liaison in collecting and submitting money collected from various fund-raisers during the year. He/she must be an active member of the Chorus for one year prior to candidacy and must have previously been a librarian or historian for one semester. |
| Section 5: The librarians have charge of all music and must distribute and collect it. They must file and keep an account of all music and keep an account of all the music. They must be active members of the Chorus for one year or have previously been a historian for a semester. |
| Section 6: The historians must keep a scrapbook of the year's events. They must also keep an account of the history of the Chorus. They must be active members of the Chorus for one semester or have good attendance for the semester they are starting out in. |
Article 8 |
| Section 1: The Executive Board consists of four officers. |
| Section 2: All chorus business is done by or through the Executive Board with the approval of the director and the Campus Activities Liaison. |
| Section 3: Meetings are to take place at the request of the president, members, or director. A quorum shall equal fifty percent plus one. |
Article 9 |
| Section 1: All parliamentary procedures shall be conducted according to the revised edition of Robert's Rules of Parliamentary Procedure. |
Article 10 |
| Section 1: This constitution may be amended at any rehearsal or business meeting of the Chorus by a two-thirds vote of the total members, provided that the amendment hasbeen submitted in writing and read at the previous regular meeting with the Campus Activities Liaison. |
Article 11 |
| Section 1: Plaques shall be given to graduating members who are active in the chorus at the Performing Arts Banquet and will be ordered by the Campus Activities Liaison. |
Article 12 |
| Section 1: Special committees shall be set up at the beginning of each year with an E-Board member as chairperson. The committees are as follows: Publicity, Alumni, andRecruitment. |
